“It’s been too long since I’ve heard anything new from The Wayward (hailing from Baltimore, Maryland and Fairfax, Virginia respectively). The destructively progressive, noise-rock trio still has the distinguished honor of being one of the tightest, most technically impressive live acts I’ve ever seen!

Formed out of the ashes of the godly Carrion with the only difference being Jesse Skrobiz replacing Dustin Swanson on bass (Nate Simms is still bashing the kit and Nick Skrobiz is still dazzling with his proficient noise-rock shred and lacerated vocal chords), The Wayward still tours relentlessly, but haven’t released any new material since 2007’s shamefully underrated opus, Overexposure.

Unveiled at the tail end of 2009, the trio’s latest 7” recording features two newer cuts and a cover of The Birthday Party’s “The Friend Catcher.” Basically, the original compositions are sheer class, and the band couldn’t have chosen a better cover, as there’s more than a few similarities between the two outfit’s jagged, rhythmic workouts and scraping guitar textures. Their cover is a spot on rendition of the original with Nick Skrobiz mutating his scathing howl into the drugged out drawl of TBP’s very own Nick Cave. The major different is that The Wayward’s version is so damn heavy, it’s as much of an exercise in stomping, noise-damaged doom as it is a nod to the legendary, originators! Fucking awesome stuff, and they even renamed it as “The Chum Snatcher,” which is telltale of its pulsating, bone-rattling surge.

They didn’t skimp on the original material either. Side A will give you more than a run for your money with “Alzheimer’s” and “Ripcord.” This pair of dizzying, almost virtuoso-esque noise-prog jams is as tricky, agitated and winding as anything the band has ever done. “Alzheimer’s” throws early Today is the Day, Big Black, King Crimson and Black Flag into a room and let’s ‘em duke it out for the top dog award. Sporting an intro with deliberately slow pacing, a murky bass presence and spoken vocals, it isn’t long before this towering inferno burns up high into a sky of manic drumming (swift, punctuated fills unload by the bucketful and Simms proves he’s capable of literally rolling across his kit for days on end), unbelievable guitar wizardry that toys with the type of jazzy progressions and noisy punk abandon that was the mark of Am-Rep TITD with bass licks to match, all the while Nick’s patented, semi-melodic shout rings out like a gunshot above the complexity laden din produced by the instruments.

If Am-Rep was still around, I guarantee they would have put out every Carrion and The Wayward release to come down the pike. “Alzheimer’s” is without a doubt one of the tensest, most varied weapons the band has added to their arsenal thus far. “Ripcord” is much shorter on the other hand and melds the broken back punk ethos of Black Flag with the number crunching arrangements of King Crimson circa their debut In the Court of the Crimson King.

I’m floored by this 7” and everything the members have done past and present. The only complaint I can levy against the band is that there is never enough of The Wayward to go around. Three new tracks is both a sensuous fuck and a blue balling tease, but I’ll take any loving I can get from the band at this point. Not so new but RECENT review of BALACLAVA’s “Shame” EP up over at DeafSparrow.com, THEY GAVE IT A 3.5 out of 5!!

“Balaclava call Richmond home but live somewhere between punk and metal. And yeah, hardcore too. Shame is their seven inch released by Forcefield Records and it packs four songs of massive riffs, post hardcore structures (here and there but not all over) and plenty of metallic brutality. Balaclava sound to me like the punk band that never intended to come out even as slightly metal, but whose sounds came out so fluidly and flowed so organically they just couldn’t help it. “Fences” is as nice as this quartet is willing to play, and to be frank, it ain’t that nice. The track starts clear, only to distort to a cruel mid tempo. The other three songs are way harsher, with faster tempos and the constancy of a D beat band with too much in their mind.” – DeafSparrow.com

-THE WAYWARD 7″, not sure I ever announced it because final details were still being worked out but we are moving forward on this and I’m extremely stoked. I have known these guys for such a long time, shit probably around the time I truly began getting involved in the “punk scene”. I’ve loved everything the dudes have ever done as a band and more so as friends and human beings. I am going to do my best to expedite this one and have it out asap but still do it the justice it deserves. They have recorded and have art in the finishing stage.

-CITY OF SHIPS is playing Gainesville Fest then heading west hitting all of the west coast and southwest Nov 3rd to the 23. For 2010 they will be doing a few east coast dates with Rosetta and Battlefields January 15th to the 24th (emulate_booking@hotmail.com) followed by a trip back over the pond to Europe March 29th to April 19th (mike.persilbooking@gmail.com). They got a new full length record out via Sound Study / Translation Loss, peep both them on the road and the record, I put money on neither disappointing.

In addition we would like to apologize for a few mail order delays that have happened over the past month, the people who have had to wait we have tried to rectify the situation with a few goodies that we had lying around.  I have personally had a few family medical situations as well as functions (Congratulations to both my brother Mike and my new sister Sarah on their recent wedding) that have come up and kept me out of Richmond as well as out of the FF grind.  On that note anyone still missing an order from us should be recieving it soon, all US orders have been bumped up to priorty and a few of the longer delayed, will like I said earlier have some additional stuff in there.

We updated a bunch of the band sites on our website and added new reviews for INFERNAL STRONGHOLD, TOURNAMENT, COUGH, LORD BY FIRE, CANNABIS CORPSE, and OUTCLASSED and will be updating more of the band sites as well as the whole website in general in the coming weeks.  We should have a bunch new reviews surfacing soon and are extremely excited to see what everyone thinks of our new stuff as well as some of our not so new stuff.

1)   SORRY, SOO SORRY, FOR MAIL ORDER DELAYS!!  ALL MAIL ORDERS and WHOLESALE ORDERS WILL SHIP TOMORROW 06/09/2009!!  I was out of town visiting friends in Pittsburgh (big ups to Bearacougar dudes, Ed Hochuli dudes, Who Goes There? dudes, Pansori dudes, Liquid Limbs dudes, City of Ships dudes).  If you have been waiting awhile on a mail order expect some free FORCEFIELD shit thrown in there for the delay.  Once again we are so sorry for the delay.

2)  COUGH and JUICE TYME! records are officially out and available in the web store.

3)  TOURNAMENT, INFERNAL STRONGHOLD, and BALACLAVA releases are all right around the corner,  TOURNAMENT is having a record release party June 18th and 19th in New York.  INFERNAL STRONGHOLD will have their new record on their upcoming full US tour this July and August.  The records will be officially out everywhere this August 18th.

4)  We have currently started work on the INTER ARMA full length we are awaiting art and mastering and hope to have this out everywhere this September.  We also hope to have the 2nd press of CANNABIS CORPSE’S “Blunted At Birth” 12″ available this September as well.

5)  We lied on nothing else coming out in 2009, we actually have 3 to 5 releases that are starting to take shape for this Fall and Winter.  We love dudes and records so going on hold just didn’t seem right, so get stoked cause it should be some killer stuff.  In addition we are not looking for any new bands or projects we are swamped and lined up with projects that we are stoked on with people we care about.  So after the “Blunted at Birth” 12″ LP we will be doing no less than 3 more releases before 2010 and no more than 5.  In addition we will also be doing a tape release this summer for Richmond punk band, THIS BLACK BOX which is not part of the upcoming fall/winter stuff.

6)  Lastly I would like to announce that FORCEFIELD has now gone back to a triumvirate.  FORCEFIELD came into this world as a three man operation and thankfully we are returning to that formula.  Stoked to announce new members of Forcefield operation in Mark and Wilbo.

**FORCEFIELD will be out of town and out of operation the weekend of June 17th-June 20th.  I will be in New York for the TOURNAMENT record release parties while Wilbo and Mark will be getting their minds blown by the best show Richmond has seen all year in INTER ARMA, US CHRISTMAS, VALKYRIE, and the YOUNG SINCLAIRS followed by the one and only NO WAY FEST.  Brandon and Lauren did an amazing job this year on the NO WAY FEST lineup, so check that shit out.**
